Welcome

The 2008-2009 Council

The University of Richmond’s Honor System was created by the students and for the students in order to maintain high standards of academic integrity. Although the system has changed over time, the Honor Code has existed since the beginning of Richmond College in 1830. Today, through student and faculty support, the Honor System helps to create a community of integrity and trust  for all students. The Honor System does not serve the university as a set of laws, but rather as a set of expectations and a way of life accepted and promoted by each member of the university community. The campus community assumes that each student values honor and integrity unless his or her actions prove otherwise.

The Richmond and Westhampton College Honor Councils came together in 1981 shortly after Richmond and Westhampton College student s began attending classes together. Today, they still work and function together under the University of Richmond’s Honor Code Statute as well as under their own respective statutes. These statutes delineate possible violations and sanctions as well as procedures to be followed by both Councils and members of the student body.

The University of Richmond Honor System aspires to instill a lifelong dedication to academic integrity in each student. As a result of the Honor Code, the university community benefits from an open, trusting, and respectful environment both in and out of the classroom. It is essential that the students, faculty, and Honor Councils all work together to uphold these traditions and values.

We hope that this website serves as a resource helping to further your understanding of the Honor System. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
